What it is
A temporary circuit laid out around the Hard Rock Stadium campus in Miami Gardens, mixing a genuinely quick section through the infield with slower stadium corners. The race runs Sunday afternoon local time — early evening in the UK. What sets Miami apart is everything either side of it: the race weekend has become the anchor for a week of events across the city, and most people who go spend far more time on South Beach and in Wynwood than they do at the circuit.
Tickets
Two things decide this trip, and neither is the ticket price. The first is shade: May in Miami sits around 30C with high humidity and the circuit has very little natural cover, so a covered grandstand earns its premium here in a way it does not at other races. The second is where you sleep — the circuit is sixteen miles from South Beach, so a cheap bed on the beach can cost you two hours and two rideshares on race day. Decide the hotel and the ticket together, not in that order.
Miami holds its price better than Austin and softens later. Grandstand inventory tends to loosen inside the final week rather than the final fortnight.
Compare before you buy: the same seats are routinely 10-20% apart between marketplaces once checkout fees land. Price every one of them, and compare the all-in total at checkout rather than the listing price:
Best for: A global resale marketplace - worth pricing against the bigger two, and often the one still holding seats for European fixtures
Buyer fees are added at checkout, so compare the final total rather than the listing price
Best for: Official event packages pairing a seat with a hotel, strongest on European F1 and tennis
Prices are per package and shown in the local currency; check what the seat category actually includes
| Where you sit | Cheap end | Typical | Top end |
|---|---|---|---|
| General admission | £250 | £400 | £650 |
| Grandstand | £500 | £850 | £1,400 |
| Hospitality | £2,500 | £4,200 | £7,000 |
Where to stay
Which part of Miami you sleep in moves the total more than the seat usually does, and the cheap bed an hour out stops being cheap on the day. The tiers below are what actually works for this building.
Aventura or Hallandale Beach
Twenty minutes from the circuit instead of an hour, and priced well below the beach. The compromise is that the evenings are quiet.
South Beach or Brickell
Where the race-weekend social calendar actually happens. Accept that you will spend an hour each way on race day and price the rideshares in.
Fort Lauderdale
Cheaper beds, its own airport, and a straightforward run south to the circuit. The best-value base of the three if you are not chasing nightlife.
Getting there
- The circuit is at Miami Gardens, roughly 16 miles north of South Beach and nowhere near the parts of Miami people picture when they book this trip. Plan the journey before you pick the hotel.
- There is a shuttle operation from park-and-ride sites and from Golden Glades; the Brightline does not serve the venue directly. Rideshare works but the drop-off points are a long walk in May heat.
- Heat and humidity are the thing nobody budgets for. Afternoon temperatures sit near 30C with high humidity and there is very little natural shade — a covered grandstand is worth more here than at any other race on the calendar.
- From the UK: Miami is one of the better-served US routes, and Fort Lauderdale is worth pricing separately — it is often cheaper and closer to the northern hotels.
Flying from the UK for Miami GP? Sort the ESTA first
British citizens travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Programme, which means no visa but a mandatory ESTA — an electronic travel authorisation you must hold before you board. Airlines will refuse boarding without one.
- Apply only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — the official US Customs and Border Protection site. Dozens of copycat sites rank for “ESTA” and charge several times the government fee to type your details into the same form. There is no faster or better version; there is only the official one and resellers.
- Apply early, not at the airport. Most approvals come back in minutes, but CBP asks for at least 72 hours and a small share get referred for review. Do it when you book the flight, not the week you fly.
- It lasts two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first — so one application usually covers several trips. Check whether you already have a live one before paying again.
- An ESTA is permission to travel, not permission to enter. The decision is made by the officer at the border.
- Not everyone qualifies. Dual nationals of certain countries, anyone who has travelled to particular countries since 2011, and anyone with a prior visa refusal or certain convictions may need a full visa instead — which takes months, not minutes. Check before you book anything.
Fees and eligibility rules change, and the official site is the only place that is guaranteed current. We take no commission on any of this — there is none to take, which is rather the point.
Make a trip of it
Price Fort Lauderdale (FLL) as well as Miami (MIA) — it is frequently cheaper and it is closer to the northern hotels that are closer to the track.
