Getting there

The circuit is about 15 miles southeast of downtown Austin and there is no rail to it. Every option is a road option, and every road option is the same road.
Use the official park-and-ride shuttles from downtown rather than a rideshare. Surge pricing on Sunday evening is severe and the pickup zones sit a long walk from the gates.
Budget two hours to get out after the chequered flag. That is not pessimism, it is the normal experience — and it is the single biggest argument for staying downtown rather than near the track.
From the UK: there is a direct London-Austin service, and it lands you in the city rather than at a connection. Fly in Thursday, leave Monday.

Flying from the UK? Sort the ESTA first

British citizens travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Programme, which means no visa but a mandatory ESTA — an electronic travel authorisation you must hold before you board. Airlines will refuse boarding without one.

Apply only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — the official US Customs and Border Protection site. Dozens of copycat sites rank for “ESTA” and charge several times the government fee to type your details into the same form. There is no faster or better version; there is only the official one and resellers.
Apply early, not at the airport. Most approvals come back in minutes, but CBP asks for at least 72 hours and a small share get referred for review. Do it when you book the flight, not the week you fly.
It lasts two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first — so one application usually covers several trips. Check whether you already have a live one before paying again.
An ESTA is permission to travel, not permission to enter. The decision is made by the officer at the border.
Not everyone qualifies. Dual nationals of certain countries, anyone who has travelled to particular countries since 2011, and anyone with a prior visa refusal or certain convictions may need a full visa instead — which takes months, not minutes. Check before you book anything.

Shared by every event in this building. Which tier is worth it changes with the event — a fight weekend and a Sunday league game price the same room very differently — but the geography does not.

Shuttle pickups are on your doorstep and the city is walkable at night. Race-weekend rates are steep, but you are paying for the evenings as much as the race.

Ten minutes from downtown, quieter, better food, and rates that have not been rewritten for the race quite as aggressively.

Half the downtown rate. You give up walkable evenings and gain a rideshare bill, so it only wins if you are driving anyway.

Make a trip of it

The race ticket includes the post-race concert on the main stage, and COTA books genuinely large acts — check who is playing before you write off the Sunday evening. Beyond the circuit it is Austin: live music on Rainey and 6th, the Franklin Barbecue queue (go early or do not bother), and Barton Springs for the morning after.
