What it is
Monaco squeezes a Grand Prix into two square kilometres of principality: the harbour chicane, Casino Square, the tunnel, and grandstands stacked against apartment balconies. The racing is famously processional; the weekend is famously not the point of question — it is the spectacle, the setting and the closest fans get to the cars anywhere on the calendar. Thursday's public track walk and Friday's support races are the underrated days.

Grandstands sell out by spring at prices only Vegas rivals, and Monaco never meaningfully dips — this is a buy-early market top to bottom. The Rocher (the hillside standing area above the circuit) is the famous budget route in and genuinely decent viewing. The alternative markets are the point here: apartment terraces and balcony packages along the circuit sell through specialist agents and often beat equivalent grandstands on both view and price. Yacht and terrace hospitality is its own economy — if you're asking, it's too much.

Some hotel doors here are 200 metres from Casino Square — across the street is another country and another price bracket. Walk down to the circuit, sleep at French rates.
Monaco itself (Fairmont, Hermitage, Hôtel de Paris)
Four figures a night on race weekend and the Fairmont literally overhangs the hairpin — rooms with a track view sell out a year ahead. If it is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, this is the once.
Getting there
- The move: stay in Nice and take the train in. Nice-Ville to Monaco Monte-Carlo is ~20 minutes, runs constantly on race weekend, and drops you inside the circuit perimeter. Driving into Monaco on race days is not a plan, it is a mistake.
- The helicopter transfer from Nice airport is about 7 minutes and cheaper than its reputation (book ahead) — as a one-way treat it is the best €200 of the trip.
- From the UK: fly to Nice — 2 hours from London, heavily served. The train from the airport tram/station connection into Monaco beats any car service on race weekend.
- Inside Monaco everything is walkable but hilly, with public lifts and escalators cut into the rock doing the climbing for you — learn the lift routes on day one.
Make a trip of it
Sleep in Nice, train in daily, and put the money saved into one great harbour-side dinner. Walk the track Thursday evening — it is open to the public and it is the best free thing in Formula 1.
