Getting there
- The move: stay in Nice and take the train in. Nice-Ville to Monaco Monte-Carlo is ~20 minutes, runs constantly on race weekend, and drops you inside the circuit perimeter. Driving into Monaco on race days is not a plan, it is a mistake.
- The helicopter transfer from Nice airport is about 7 minutes and cheaper than its reputation (book ahead) — as a one-way treat it is the best €200 of the trip.
- From the UK: fly to Nice — 2 hours from London, heavily served. The train from the airport tram/station connection into Monaco beats any car service on race weekend.
- Inside Monaco everything is walkable but hilly, with public lifts and escalators cut into the rock doing the climbing for you — learn the lift routes on day one.
Where to stay
Shared by every event in this building. Which tier is worth it changes with the event — a fight weekend and a Sunday league game price the same room very differently — but the geography does not.
Value (Nice)
Nice 3-4 stars near the station or old town
A fraction of Monaco prices, a real city with real restaurants, and a 20-minute train to the paddock gates. This is how most sane race-goers do Monaco.
Border (Beausoleil)
Beausoleil, the French town uphill of Monte Carlo
Some hotel doors here are 200 metres from Casino Square — across the street is another country and another price bracket. Walk down to the circuit, sleep at French rates.
In the principality
Monaco itself (Fairmont, Hermitage, Hôtel de Paris)
Four figures a night on race weekend and the Fairmont literally overhangs the hairpin — rooms with a track view sell out a year ahead. If it is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, this is the once.
Make a trip of it
Walk the full track on Thursday evening when it opens to the public. Èze village and the coastal path fill a morning; lunch over the Italian border in Ventimiglia is 25 minutes by train and half the price of anything in Monte Carlo.
