What it is

Wimbledon runs its usual fortnight, expected 28 June to 11 July in 2027. It is the only Grand Slam where you can decide to go the night before — if you are willing to queue — and the only one where the grounds themselves, Hill picnic included, are worth the day without a show-court seat. First-week grounds days are the connoisseur's play: fifteen courts of top-hundred tennis a few feet away.

Seat — tickets

Three doors in, and they are genuinely different. One: the public ballot, entered the preceding autumn — face value show-court seats if drawn, pure luck. Two: The Queue — turn up early (or camp) for on-the-day grounds passes and a shot at returned show-court tickets; this is the reliable route and the cultural experience. Three: debentures — the only Wimbledon tickets that are legally resalable, which is why marketplace listings exist at all; they are premium seats at premium prices that track the draw. Anything on a marketplace that is not a debenture is a ticket that can be refused at the gate — do not buy ordinary ballot tickets secondhand.

Price watch

Debenture prices double overnight when a British player reaches the second week. Early-round grounds passes are fixed-price and always the value — the play is going early in the fortnight, not late.

Compare before you buy: the same seats are routinely 10-20% apart between marketplaces once checkout fees land. Check all three:

StubHub

Best for: US events — deepest inventory for Vegas, NFL and arena fights

Fees added at checkout (~20-30%) — compare final price, not listing price

viagogo

Best for: UK & European events, GBP pricing

Fees added at checkout (~25-30%) — always compare the all-in total

Sports Events 365

Best for: International sports specialist — often has allocations others don't

Prices shown are closer to all-in; good benchmark for the other two

Stay — where to sleep

Value (central London)

Anywhere on the District line or near Waterloo

Central London mid-week rates barely notice Wimbledon, and the commute out is 30 minutes. The whole city as your evening beats anything within a mile of the grounds.

Local (Putney / Southfields)

Putney's riverside hotels and pubs-with-rooms

Ten minutes from the gates, a proper high street, and the rowing-club stretch of the Thames for morning walks. Books up for the middle weekend well in advance.

The village

Wimbledon Village boutiques (Hotel du Vin, Cannizaro House)

Leafy, walkable to the grounds across the common, and where the players' entourages drink. Small inventory, championship prices — book at the start of the year.

Make a trip of it

Do one Queue day even if you hold tickets for another — arrive by 6am with breakfast and you will be on the grounds by late morning. The Hill with a picnic during a big Centre Court match is the day out.
