Getting there
- Southfields on the District line is the classic approach — 15 minutes' walk to the gates, or the shuttle buses if the legs are saving themselves. Wimbledon mainline station (from Waterloo, ~18 min) works equally well.
- Queuing for on-the-day grounds passes starts in Wimbledon Park: thousands camp overnight for the show-court day tickets. If you are queueing, treat it as the first event of the trip — bring a proper picnic.
- Do not drive. There is effectively nowhere to park, and SW19's residential streets are permit-controlled and policed with relish during The Championships.
- From the UK regions: any train into Waterloo, then the direct line out. From abroad, Heathrow is the right airport — the Piccadilly-to-District interchange at Hammersmith gets you to SW19 without touching central London.
Where to stay
Shared by every event in this building. Which tier is worth it changes with the event — a fight weekend and a Sunday league game price the same room very differently — but the geography does not.
Value (central London)
Anywhere on the District line or near Waterloo
Central London mid-week rates barely notice Wimbledon, and the commute out is 30 minutes. The whole city as your evening beats anything within a mile of the grounds.
Local (Putney / Southfields)
Putney's riverside hotels and pubs-with-rooms
Ten minutes from the gates, a proper high street, and the rowing-club stretch of the Thames for morning walks. Books up for the middle weekend well in advance.
The village
Wimbledon Village boutiques (Hotel du Vin, Cannizaro House)
Leafy, walkable to the grounds across the common, and where the players' entourages drink. Small inventory, championship prices — book at the start of the year.
Make a trip of it
Watch a match from The Hill with a picnic even if you hold show-court tickets — it is the atmosphere the fortnight is famous for. The Wimbledon museum and Centre Court tour are worth it in the first week; Cannizaro Park and the village pubs close out the evening.
